Choosing travel insurance is a complicated business despite what some may think. People love being able to go online and buy products and services in minutes. With a handbag this may be fine: you see a picture and read a description and you know what you are getting, there’s unlikely to be any small print for example telling you that the handle isn’t included or that delivery is only available in 36 states. With travel insurance there is small print and you can get caught out if you don’t read it and don’t choose the right insurance. The potential cost of having the wrong insurance is also rather high compared to the cost of a handbag. If you have insurance that isn’t valid you could end up paying tens of thousands of dollars or worse still in some countries being refused treatment you urgently need.
One way that cheap insurance sometimes gets you is by having a very low value that will be covered: this they do knowing full well that most people, apart from those who work in a hospital, have very little idea how much even basic treatments cost. Generally $50,000 worth of cover should be a bare minimum but you may well need more. Do check whether or not the value is for each separate illness or injury or to cover everything for that trip. A value for each separate incident is perhaps most important if you have a family or couple’s policy or if you are going for a long trip.
Talking of long trips do be careful how long you are covered for, especially if it is an annual multi trip policy. Often you have a maximum number of days per year and/or a maximum number of days in succession where you are insured. Also if you are going on the kind of trip where you will be virtually living in a country for a few months or longer insurance aimed at those going on vacation may be inadequate. If you are working you could even invalidate your insurance or not be covered while working. If you are going to be working, studying or just living in a place for sometime you need the same level of insurance that you would have at home. This means not just emergency treatment but also things like dental and other treatments that you will need not urgently but wont be able to wait until you get home for.
You will in most cases want to choose cover that includes getting you home in emergencies, this does include if you are injured or ill. Often you will need different transport or perhaps earlier or later transport than you had booked. You will potentially need earlier travel due to emergencies such as natural disasters and civil unrest.
Many types of specialist travel or visitor’s insurance exist to make sure that when you travel you are covered so pick carefully. Insurance exists to cover those studying abroad, working aboard short term, those regularly visiting the same country and prolific world travelers who barely have anywhere to call home. New immigrants as well can be covered on moving to the USA or elsewhere up until the point where they can organize, or get through a job, full medical insurance.
