First of all travel and visitors insurance are not quite the same, although the names do not always make this clear. As for when you need them you always need one or the other upon traveling to another country, and not just overseas this includes Canada and Mexico just as much. This article then is more about when you need different types and different levels of travel or visitor insurance.
You may need very basic insurance traveling within the USA as a US citizen, you should of course already have medical insurance but this may not be enough for some eventualities. The USA is a big country so what happens if you live in Portland and you are holidaying in Tampa Bay and either a Hurricane comes in and ruins your holiday or you could even have an accident and be unable to fly. Well with the right insurance you can in the case of a hurricane get emergency flights paid for to get you home and have all or part of your holidays cost paid to you if you have trip cancellation and curtailment insurance. This will also cover you if you were ill or something else happened before your holiday so it had to be cancelled. If you were in Tampa and you had an illness or an injury that meant you couldn’t fly on your booked flight or needed to fly earlier insurance can cover you. Insurance could pay simply for earlier flights or if you miss your flight for treatment a later flight. Also though you may need special transport or for example a nurse on board with you and so this can be paid for with the right cover.
If you are going overseas you can choose insurance with, or add, these extra important features but then the medical cover is also very important. You may decide to go for a cheap looking policy but check the level of value covered. You will need medical cover even in countries like the UK and Canada that have free health and this is only for citizens and in some countries even emergency care won’t be offered without insurance or payment.
With visitor’s insurance this can be long or short term but covers people who are not permanent residents but are stating in a country for a longer period of time. This includes people working and studying in other countries or just living within them short term. People work in other countries for a variety off reasons, especially as the world becomes more joined up and businesses more multinational. You could be a project manager overseeing the opening of a new office or be a consultant overhauling a factories operations but you will need visitors insurance. As a student as well you will be basically living in a country even if for just one semester but potentially for a number of years. You as a holiday maker would perhaps wait to return home for some conditions but if you are somewhere for longer you may have to have treatment. This could be something like a toothache or a bad back so visitor’s insurance should cover this.
